Exterior painting in autumn: when is it still responsible?

Late August and September can still be good periods for exterior painting. October can also sometimes offer suitable working days.

However, at MULTI Klussenbedrijf we don't only look at the outdoor temperature.

For painting work on frames, doors and other facade wood, air humidity, morning and evening condensation, moisture in the wood and sufficient drying time are also important. Paint applied under unfavorable conditions may look good initially, but may not adhere properly or cause problems later.

Not everything needs to wait until spring

When the existing paint layer is still intact and protective and you mainly want a different color or fresher appearance, it is often wiser to schedule larger painting work in a more favorable season.

But damage is different.

Peeling paint, bare wood sections, open caulk joints and damage around sills deserve attention before the wet season. Unprotected wood can absorb moisture and this increases the risk of further damage.

That's why we distinguish between:

work needed to protect the wood and work that is mainly cosmetic.

Sometimes the protective repairs can be done in autumn and a larger cosmetic paint job can follow later.

Preparation determines the final result

Good exterior painting doesn't start with the topcoat.

First, the existing substrate must be assessed.

Depending on the situation, work may consist of cleaning, removing loose paint layers, sanding, degreasing, performing wood repairs, restoring open joints and priming bare areas.

Only when the base is sound, clean and sufficiently dry does a new topcoat have a good starting position.

An extra coat of paint over a poor substrate won't solve the problem.

Wood rot: repair or replace?

With localized damage, a complete frame doesn't automatically need to be replaced.

Small damaged parts can sometimes still be repaired well.

However, when sills or stiles are affected over a greater length, replacement of a component may be a better solution.

We prefer to assess this on site, because visible damage doesn't always show how far an infestation actually extends.

Extra attention to sills and caulk joints

When inspecting exterior painting work, we don't just look at the large visible surfaces.

Precisely the underside of windows and doors, sills, connections around glass and joints between frame and facade are important points.

Water easily pools here or can enter behind the existing finish through an open connection.

A neat paint layer has little value when a damaged caulk joint next to it continues to let water through.

Painting in October requires different planning

In autumn, available drying windows become shorter.

In the morning, condensation can form on cold frames and later in the day the temperature drops faster. This means a painter can't simply use the same daily rhythm as in the middle of summer.

Sometimes good painting work actually means starting later, stopping earlier or skipping a planned day when conditions aren't suitable.

Have exterior painting assessed?

Do you see peeling paint, bare spots, open caulk joints, damaged sills or early signs of wood damage?

Send a few clear photos of the frames, doors or other wooden parts via AtaList.

Also mention which side of the house it is if relevant, and whether you mainly want maintenance, repairs or a complete new finish.

Based on that, we can make an initial assessment. For wood damage, hard-to-reach areas and a final price, we recommend a non-binding site inspection.
