Plasterwork or renovation wallpaper: what fits best with your home?
Smooth, calm walls can be created in different ways. Two commonly used options in a home renovation are plasterwork and renovation wallpaper.
But which solution is better?
There is no standard answer to that. The right choice depends, among other things, on the current condition of the walls, the desired end result and how much preparation is needed.
At MULTI Klussenbedrijf, we therefore prefer to first look at the existing substrate before advising which finish is most logical.
When to choose plasterwork?
Plasterwork is interesting when walls are clearly uneven, have damage or when an existing space is being renovated more thoroughly.
With proper preparation, a plasterer can create a new, even base. After sufficient drying and further finishing, the wall can be painted in the desired color.
Plasterwork can be especially logical when, during renovation, for example, channels for electrical work have been made, old finishes have been removed or different wall sections need to become one smooth whole again.
The quality of the result starts with the substrate. Loose parts, cracks and different materials must be assessed beforehand and prepared where necessary.
When can renovation wallpaper be interesting?
Renovation wallpaper is another way to create a calm and even wall finish.
The material is carefully applied to a prepared wall and then usually painted. Especially when the existing substrate is already reasonably flat and stable, renovation wallpaper can be an interesting solution.
However, renovation wallpaper does not automatically hide every bad wall.
Holes, strong unevenness, loose substrates and other damage must first be repaired. The seams and joints also require careful processing if the end result is to look smooth.
The difference is also in the substrate
The question is therefore not only:
"Do we want plasterwork or renovation wallpaper?"
A better first question is:
"What is the current condition of the wall?"
A reasonably flat wall with limited damage requires a different approach than an old wall with large height differences, loose layers or many repair points.
During a renovation, we therefore look at, among other things:
- how flat the existing wall is;
- whether there are cracks or damage;
- whether old paint or wallpaper layers are well adhered;
- whether new electrical outlets or cable channels have been made;
- which parts need to be repaired first;
- what final appearance is desired.
Only then can we properly determine which finish is practical.
Also consider the rest of the renovation
Wall finishing usually does not stand alone.
When electrical work is being adjusted at the same time, doors or frames are being replaced, baseboards are being installed or a new floor is being laid, the work sequence must align with that.
We prefer to do technical work where the wall still needs to be opened or repaired before the final wall finish.
After that, plasterwork or renovation wallpaper, painting, flooring and baseboards can be executed in a logical sequence.
This prevents a newly finished wall from being damaged again later.
Smooth walls are determined by the details
With both solutions, ultimately the connections stand out.
Think of corners, ceiling lines, frames, outlets and the transition to baseboards.
A large wall surface may look smooth at first glance, but sloppy edges or poorly finished connections remain visible.
Therefore, when we hand over the work, we look not only at the middle of the wall, but especially at these details.
